Suburban Host Home Program from Avenues for Homeless Youth 09/13/2011

The population of homeless, unaccompanied youth is growing in Minnesota. According to a count of homeless people conducted by Wilder Research in October 2009, there are 46 percent more homeless, unaccompanied youth (ages 16 to 21) in Minnesota than were counted just three years ago. On any night in the state, an estimated 2,500 youth are homeless and on their own. Homeless youth are everywhere, including the suburbs of Hennepin County. A new program to provide safe, supportive transitional housing for the homeless youth of suburban Hennepin County in volunteer homes will hold informational meetings in September. Those who are interested in learning more about suburban homeless youth and ways they can help are encouraged to attend.

Please join us for ONE of the informational meetings of the Suburban Host Home Program:

Monday, Sept 19, 6-8pm
Eisenhower Community Center
1001 Hwy 7
Hopkins, MN

Thursday, Sept 22, 6-8pm
Eden Prairie Library
565 Prairie Center Drive
Eden Prairie, MN

The Suburban Host Home Program is a community initiative involving local schools, faith communities, local government, service providers and the greater suburban Hennepin County community. The mission of the program is to address the housing needs of homeless youth by connecting them with caring adults from their own communities who are willing to provide safe housing and support. After studying housing and services options, the Suburban Host Home Program Action Council and Teens Alone turned to Avenues for Homeless Youth, which has deep experience as the coordinator of the GLBT Host Home Program. This new program is largely modeled on that existing and very successful program.

The objectives of the Suburban Host Home Program fall into two main areas:
  1. Providing safe and supportive housing to suburban homeless youth by building upon the capacity and caring that exists within the suburban community.
  2. Expanding awareness across the suburban community of the lives of homeless young people.
The immediate objective is to get the Suburban Host Home Program launched and into its startup phase. The Action Council has been planning this program and is ready to launch it and recruit the first hosts in early 2011.

At full operation, the Suburban Host Home Program will provide transitional living arrangements for ten homeless suburban youth ages 16 to 21 in safe, supportive host homes within the suburbs. The program will recruit and train adult volunteers in the suburbs to be host homes, then match suburban homeless youth with those volunteer host homes, so that the youth may continue to live, attend school, and work within their home suburban communities.

Rep. Debra Hilstrom and MPP's Eric Pusey on Democratic Visions 01/29/2011

From www.dflsd42.org
This month on Democratic Visions:
DFL Representative Debra Hilstrom
Minnesota Progressive Project’s Eric Pusey

Persuading Republican lawmakers to provide responsible and effective state deficit reduction proposals is one of the charges laid out for Minnesota House Democrats by Minority Deputy Lead Debra Hilstrom and Minority Leader Paul Thissen. Hilstrom and Minnesota Progressive Project writer Eric Pusey are featured in separate segments in the current edition of Democratic Visions.

Hilstrom tells interviewer Tim O’Brien that constituents can expect Senate and House Republicans this session to draw up numbers of state constitutional amendment bills as a means of skirting gubernatorial vetoes and over ride votes. Proposed constitutional amendments would have to be approved by Minnesota voters during the 2012 general election.

Minnesota Progressive Project writer Eric Pusey is among the few Minnesota journalists who have been reporting on and tabulating the public statements made by Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann. Pusey, who posts blogs from his southwest Minneapolis home, claims and demonstrates that the Tea Party/Republican operative is unable or unwilling to distinguish facts from unsupportable assumptions. During his interview, Pusey scolds the Star Tribune, Minnesota Public Radio and other regional broadcast news outlets for not holding Representative Bachmann accountable.

Democratic Visions is a public issues cable TV program produced by Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Edina volunteers for DFL Senate District 42. In Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina, Richfield and Eden Prairie, Democratic Visions can be seen on Comcast Channel 15 on Sundays at 9 p.m. and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.  Bloomington Cable Channel 16 carries the program on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.  In Minneapolis Democratic Visions can be seen on MTN Channel 17 Sundays at 7 p.m.  Check MTN's schedule for repeats.

Augsburg Park Library, 7100 Nicolet Avenue, Richfield, MN 55423

Cathy ten Broeke  is Project Coordinator for the Office to end Homelessness in Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

The Heading Home Hennepin Plan was developed by business and civic leaders, advocates, community members and individuals who have experienced homelessness with the goal of ending homelessness in Minneapolis and Hennepin County by 2016. This program is expected to change the paradigm from managing to ending homelessness.

The Plan is in the 4th year of the Heading Home Hennepin Initiative and has helped many people with significant cost savings. They have seen more people come into the program which has been a challenge.  They will be publishing an interim public report in November 2010 which will show their progress on the 10 Year plan to End Homelessness.
